Today's Community Profile takes a look at one of the original suburban regions in the Florence area, the Oakbrook community. This famous sign can be seen along Route 18 between Florence and Burlington. The Oakbrook neighborhood was one of the first large scale suburban residential neighborhoods in the area. The development of Oakbrook was one of the beginnings of the expansion of Florence's residential population into the outlying areas around the city.
The Oakbrook community connects Route 18 to Pleasant Valley Road at the other end. The neighborhood features homes, condominiums and apartments. There are small sub-neighborhoods throughout the area where each type of residences exist. There are also a few neighborhoods that join into the Oakbrook area, like the Thunder Ridge/Silver Creek development.
Oakbrook is known for its beautiful trees along the main road and for the variety of housing it contains. The neighborhood is situated around the Boone Links golf course and many of the homes have golf course views. It is a great family community with a park and plenty of sidewalks for walking. When the weather is warm, you can always see lots of people walking up and down the sidewalks of Oakbrook Road.
The area has grown rapidly over the years. On the Route 18 side their are all sorts of restaurants, banks and retail stores. Development in that area now includes a Kroger retail plaza and the new Boone County Library branch across Route 18. Since the neighborhood has now expanded all the way to Pleasant Valley Road, there is now a retail marketplace on that end. You can now grab groceries, do some banking, buy some products and have a pizza dinner on that end of the road. When the Pleasant Valley Road improvements take place, this end of the area should continue to grow.
